Salani Matshoba (he / him), Artist in Residence – Music

Salani Matshoba is a musician, performer, teacher and cultural ambassador from Zimbabwe. Along with playing percussion, bass, guitar and singing, Salani specializes in both making and playing mbira, which is a traditional instrument from Zimbabwe that dates back more than 1,000 years. Salani has taught and performed in such diverse places as Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, as well as Kobe, Japan and Victoria, Canada. He has worked with elementary school-aged children since 2016. In 2020, Salani moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he continues to build mbira, teach, and perform. Since 2021, Salani has taught music, dance and traditional arts with Destiny Arts Center in Oakland. This past summer, Salani taught Zimbabwean dance at the Alvin Ailey Summer Program located at UC Berkeley. Salani is happy to share his love of Zimbabwean and African music with the Walden Center school community and we are extremely happy to have him!
