Winona’s earliest memories are at Walden where her older sister, Morgan, was a student and both of her parents, Susan Alexander and Pamela Johnson, were teachers. After graduating from Walden, Winona juggled stage management and ballet classes at Oakland High School for the Arts, where she had the privilege of studying with the local legendary Bay Area director and theatre instructor, Danny Duncan. Winona’s experience with Mr. Duncan encouraged her to return to Walden as a volunteer and intern for the drama/movement and summer programs.
After extensive work in healthcare, Winona joined Walden part-time as a Lower Group teaching assistant at the request of now-retired Lower Group teacher and early childhood education advocate, Pamela Meredith. Winona is grateful to Ms. Meredith, who not only was Winona’s kindergarten teacher but a life-long mentor who trained her and gave Winona experiences on how to approach and cultivate a child-centered classroom. At the time, Winona was still working in the healthcare profession but found herself more and more drawn to the non-profit world of child development and education. Eventually, Winona was offered dual positions in Walden’s school-age childcare program (EDC) and as a classroom assistant. Winona jumped at the opportunity to be at Walden full-time, leaving healthcare, but utilizing those skills as an on-campus expert in first-aid.
Winona’s tenure at Walden has been multifaceted. Prior to her role as Admissions Coordinator, she worked as office staff, classroom assistant, substitute teacher, EDC Coordinator, and more. Winona is interested in developing inclusion and diversity practices for admissions. “It’s a dream come true to be actively involved in the growth and wellbeing of Walden Center and School, my home away from home.”
